Wikipedia ranks in top five in Google for most Keywords

May 16, 2008 Author: Timon Weller | Filed under: Search Engines

Lately i have been looking at keyword placement for many top keywords in Google and Wikipedia seems to have stolen the number one position on many top keywords. It has almost gotten to the point there placement is going ahead of hub type websites that are just focused on that one keyword Market.

Have you noticed Wikipedia in the Search Results of Google?

Look at some of these top keyword search results i did today.

Wikipedia ranks top ten in Google for most Keywords

Wikipedia ranks top ten in Google for most Keywords

The ranking poses a lot of questions about Wikipedia in Google:

  • Is it because they are one of the largest websites online?
  • Is it because they have a deal with Google?
  • Or is Google just simply in love…? lol

If it’s the first one then that makes most sense… It looks like Google sees Wikepedia like a super hub of information. However to be more fair couldn’t Wikipedia rank 5th or 6th place compared to website hubs that totally are devoted to that keyword.

An easy way of defining what a hub is like a book on the keyword. Answering all questions on that one keyword, search engines see that website like a resource or information base….And online that is a Hub…eg. A large website of say 200 plus pages related all to one keyword.

Let’s look at some more details on Wikipedia :

  • Wikipedia Alexa Rank : 8
  • Website Links to Wikipedia : 187,000 approx and that’s just to there home page (www.wikipedia.com)
  • Pages in Google : 13,500,000 pages

I’m sure them having nearly 200,000 links to there website has a huge part to play in this. Not to mention also there website is frequently updated with more pages similar to a blog. Overall in conclusion i think the size of there website is what is the biggest deciding factor for there Google ranking.

Google Donates to Burma (Myanmar) Cyclone Victims

google donates to burma (myanmar) cyclone victimsIf you have gone to Google recently you might of noticed there link to aid of the cyclone victims in Burma. The cyclone called Cyclone Nargis hit the southeast Asian country a little over a week ago.

Death toll is around 28,000 with another 33,000 or more is missing. Google has offered by aiding up to 1 million dollars to the victims of the disaster. For more detailed information on the Google aid go to there Myanmar support page.

It’s sad to think that Burma is going through yet another ordeal. But i am glad to hear the web company Google is helping in the cause. Google has promised to match donations up to $1m. Others such as the Bill Gates organisation will aid 3 million.

“Thumbs up Google and Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation for all the aid…”

Even though Google and many search engines have been banned by the Myanmar Government for Internet use it is good to see Google and others are helping the people there. Many web users in Burma have reported that access to Google, Gmail and other Google services had been blocked by the military junta governing the country. It doesn’t stop there though, the flow of any type of information in and out of the country has basically stopped.

While hoping some of the news is hearsay, it has also been speculated that the Military Junta has also been blocking some types of aid workers entering the country. Not to mention the people having to deal with all this tragedy from the cyclone, it’s horrible to think of more restrictions on this beautiful country and the people in south east asia.

I’m glad that organisations such as Google, that make money online are using it for these good causes and hopefully more and more aid will help these people in Burma get back on track.

What is Alexa Rank?

alexa rankThis is one question i keep getting asked about or debated, what is Alexa Rank? And how will it effect me?

First of all Alexa is one of the largest web ranking Search Engines on the Internet. How they rank websites is by an Alexa score related to hits to your website. However not just hits, hits that get there by people that use there toolbars or widgets.

The reason a lower number is better in Alexa is because it is seen like a race. To see an example of Alexa Rank and traffic details from Alexa click here.

“The main concept of Alexa in a nutshell is as your Alexa Rank lowers, your traffic level goes up…”

What is the importance of Alexa Rank?

The main importance is rank in the Alexa Search Engine, a lower Alexa Score generally equals better position. Another important option is Advertising on your blog or website. Even though you may be receiving a lot of non toolbar customers or readers to your website, a lower Alexa score in general is seen as a higher link worth on your website to any advertiser.

“A lower Alexa Rank score can mean higher visits to your website and therefore higher earnings…”

How do i get started with Alexa?

Well if you go to alexa.com and install there toolbar or if you own a website then you can install a widget on your website. These two options are the biggest influence on Alexa Ranking.

Can one lower there own Alexa Rank?

Yes you can by using a few techniques listed below to lower your Alexa Rank. While Alexa rank should never be seen as essential it is always good to have a all round good score for there own Search Engine Ranking.

Tips to improve Alexa Ranking -

  1. Install the Alexa toolbar or Firefox’s SearchStatus extension and set your blog or website as your homepage.
  2. Put an Alexa rank widget on your website. According to some, each click counts as a visit even if the toolbar is not used by the visitor.
  3. Become part of webmaster forums and put your url in comments. Webmasters usually have the toolbar installed. You’ll get webmasters to visit your website and offer useful feedback. It’s also a good way to give back to the community if you have useful articles to share with others.
  4. Write quality content that is related to webmasters.
  5. Get Dugg or Stumbled for good posts or pages.
  6. Use Pay Per Click Campaigns such as Bidvertiser. Buying PPCs advertisements on search engines such as Yahoo , Bidvertiser or Google will help bring in Traffic.
  7. Advertise banners and links for traffic from webmaster forums and websites.
  8. Contributing to the Buyers Web Blog and other blogs out there…

As you can see from the list above it’s all really techniques for generating more traffic. I have always found it an interesting concept rewarding a website just for there traffic level…There are more techniques to lower Alexa Rank than the ones above but after sifting through millions of options in webmaster forums, etc these ones seemed to be the prominent ways to help your score.

The interesting thing i noticed is that the websites that are above him are sub-domains…What’s up with that…?

It appears alot of the search engines are putting more placement for secondary pages than before? I wonder what they are saying. Buyers Web is number 1 for Online Money Ramblings. Rankings always seems to be improving.. Buyers Web is still a young blog.
